Decorating Your Home With Mid-Century Modern Furniture

These days, retro furniture can be found in a variety of ways and locations, but the simplest is probably just shopping on-line. A keyword search will turn up just about anything you might be looking for, from retro furniture to custom sofas to furniture discounters. You can also gear your search to finding specific manufacturers; and while there are many companies offering a wide variety of products, one of the oldest and most consistently sought-after manufacturers is Heywood-Wakefield.
After its 1979 bankruptcy liquidation, the company was re-founded in Florida in 1991. Many of this company's styles were developed in the years right after World War II, and Heywood-Wakefield today produces a high-quality specialty line of solid-wood furniture, based on the bedroom pieces, sofas, dining room furniture, night stands, lamp tables bookcases and even a newly-added collection of good quality designer area rugs. These 1950s and 1960s styles are as contemporary today as they were back, and the Heywood-Wakefield company has taken great pains to make sure the original American-made quality has come through to today.
Heywood-Wakefield also offers a very retro desk, the M 926, which features steam-bent drawers and Heywood-Wakefield‚s signature smooth, curved lines. It‚s also interesting to note that Heywood-Wakefield solid wood furniture is still made 100% right here in the United States, using North American hardwoods and components still produced in and around the New England states. The original designs are also of American provenance, having been developed beginning in the 1930s by some of the best furniture designers working in New York and Boston. Especially in the post-WWII period, the styles reflected the optimism and exuberance of the rapidly-growing American population and economy.
Today the styles are still relevant. Many of today's furniture buyers are collecting the 1960's fashions they were familiar with during their childhood years, assembling homes full of the funky retro designs that bring back positive memories of their formative years. Some are even taking their cues from modern television such as the Mad Med TV and Masters of Sex shows, which features lots of retro furniture.
